From a young age Dustin loved sports. He began to skate at the age of 1 and started playing organized hockey at the age of 5. He played baseball and rugby throughout high school. He started officiating minor hockey at 12 and junior hockey at the age of 21. He used to work out in a global gym thinking he was fit (but was far from it). In 2011 coming off an ankle/foot injury he found Crossfit using in to get back into shape to help with his officiating (which he now does major junior hockey). After falling in love with Crossfit he began training more and competes in it as a sport (In 2014 3rd place at The Okanagan Valley Throwdown, 5th place at Sweatfest and in 2015 4th place at The Okanagan Valley Throwdown). He now takes that love for Crossfit and fitness sharing it to as many clients/athletes as he can.
A former Junior A and Collegiate hockey player with over 15 years of teaching and training experience, I started CrossFit South Okanagan 4 years ago in my yard with the mission to create a community of people who valued and understood true fitness and performance. During the day I teach full time at Glenrosa Middle School where I teach Human Performance, PE and run the Glenrosa Middle School High Performance Hockey Academy with my colleague, friend and fellow CrossFit nut Anthony Greer. Running CFSO in the mornings and evenings and seeing the community grow and people succeed is a passion for me rivalled only by my love for my beautiful wife and three children (14, 14 & 18). Without them I could not have done any of this, thanks guys!
Former basketball player, decent golfer, and someone who genuinely loves sports… you name it, I generally like it. During the day, Brendan teaches full time at Glenrosa Middle School.
“I have achieved greatness, only because I have stood on the shoulders of giants.” In this case, greatness is just not being a CrossFit Level One instructor (although that is pretty greatJ) It might mean that I improve workout times, overcome various obstacles and immobilities, push the limits my over 40 body can do, or just hang out in Peachland with my family (a great wife and two superstar kids).
In terms of giants… maybe this refers to Coach Hayter. I don’t really remember standing on Brent’s clunky shoulders, but he did encourage me to join CrossFit years ago at school, and I tinkered with it, and then began to really follow it and love it. Now I get to follow great athletes and people all the time at CrossFit SouthOkanagan… in some ways they are the giants. Like really, who can do a Walker Up, transform like a Minty, or Paleo like Carleen? It’s just fun.
Ever since I can remember I have loved playing sports and being active. I played in house league and rep. level soccer and fastball throughout my childhood. Then in highschool I juggled playing soccer for the school team, community team & indoor, ice hockey and fastball. A few years after having our sons I discovered CrossFit through a friend in Kelowna. That year for my birthday I was gifted a “fundamentals” course with CFSO in Summerland. I immediately loved it and loved not being bored when working out at the “box”.
About a year later I went and took my Level 1 & CrossFit Kids/Teens courses in Calgary & Seattle, WA. I have been programming and coaching kids class ever since. I sometimes cover teens and adult classes too.
I competed in the first ever South Okanagan ThrowDown and our team made it to the finals. It was a great experience and lots of fun!
I have taken part in the CrossFit Open every year since joining the box, some years registered and some years not.
We are a CrossFit family! My awesome Husband Robin and our two cool dude Sons are members at Evolution Athletics too!
I love being a kids/teens coach, seeing the progress and excitement in the kids’ eyes when they work towards a goal and achieve it. I love hearing how the kids getting stronger in class effects them in everyday life!
I love what CrossFit has to offer. Functional fitness for everyone at every level/stage in life, varied programming (to avoid being bored)and a great social aspect. It all sets you up to be STRONG not only physically, but mentally in life!
